Garlic Powder, Garlic Granules or Garlic Salt? Choose the Right Jar for Filipino Ulam

Particle size affects how dried garlic disperses, while garlic salt contributes both flavour and salt. Choose the form before adjusting the recipe’s other seasonings.

Garlic powder and garlic granules can add garlic flavour without peeling a bulb. Garlic salt also adds salt, so it cannot simply replace the same spoonful of plain dried garlic. Read the ingredients before seasoning rice, a meat marinade or a pan of vegetables. Source 1

Three labels, three useful checks

Match the texture to the job

Hela Spice describes powder as fine and flour-like, while granulated garlic has a sandier texture. The fine powder disperses through a sauce or dressing; coarser granules need attention to how they are distributed. These descriptions help with the physical choice, but they do not establish one universal spoon-for-spoon conversion for every brand. Source 4

For a soy-based marinade, plain dried garlic gives you two controls: the garlic quantity and the salty sauce quantity. McCormick recommends a light hand with its powder in marinades, sauces and stews. Measure into a spoon before adding it, then follow a recipe written for that form of garlic. Source 2

Keep garlic salt from doubling the seasoning

McCormick’s cooking advice uses garlic salt in place of some or all of the plain salt. Apply that logic to a Filipino vegetable pan: note the toyo, patis, bagoong or other seasoning already going in before reaching for a second salty ingredient. If the dish needs more garlic after its salt level is right, choose a garlic-only product. Source 5

A practical kitchen note can be very short: product name, amount used and any ordinary salt withheld. Keep that note beside the recipe you already cook. If you change both the jar and the amount of soy sauce at once, you will have less information about which change affected the result.

A powdered shortcut will not make garlic chips

Dry powder distributes flavour without the distinct pieces that fresh minced garlic leaves in a dish. Hela’s comparison makes that texture difference clear. For sinangag that you want to finish with visible crisp garlic, keep the fresh-garlic stage in the recipe. Treat a dried product as a different way of seasoning, not a way to recreate those fried pieces. Source 4

When choosing a pantry jar, favour the form you will actually use. If your usual ulam already includes salty condiments and you want separate control over garlic, a garlic-only powder or granule is the more flexible choice. Garlic salt can be convenient when the recipe’s plain salt is the ingredient you intend to replace. Source 5
