Project-Day Lunch for Six: Check a ₱300 Target Before Shopping

A single-occasion student lunch with six portions, a transparent peso allocation and a cooking order that does not depend on an unseen pantry.

In this article

For six classmates, a shared rice pot and two simple ulam can keep lunch and cleanup manageable. Start with the available stove, safe water, utensils and dietary restrictions, then price the menu against a ₱300 target. This is a one-lunch planning example whose feasibility depends on actual local prices and what the group already has.

Agree on the menu and cash limit

A practical example is rice, tortang pechay with eggs, and a small cooked tomato-and-tofu side. For a planning ceiling of ₱300, reserve ₱60 for rice, ₱90 for eggs, ₱70 for greens or other vegetables, ₱40 for tofu and aromatics, and ₱40 for cooking fuel, oil or substitutions. Those are hypothetical allocations, not recorded shelf prices. The plan breaks if the participants need to buy drinking water, if prices exceed the allowance or if six eggs are not within budget; change the menu or acknowledge the cost.

For six sample portions, price about 450 g uncooked rice, six eggs, 600 g prepared vegetables and 300 g firm tofu, plus tomato, onion, garlic, oil and seasonings. Start with a modest rice portion and adjust for the diners' appetites; these quantities are not an age-specific nutrition prescription. Divide the vegetables between a shallow egg torta and a tomato-tofu side. Confirm egg, soy and wheat restrictions before choosing sauces.

Cook in shallow, manageable batches

  1. Confirm the number of diners and any ingredient restrictions. Agree who supplies safe drinking water, rice, pan, lid, utensils and soap before leaving to shop.
  2. Compare the actual prices of six eggs and the tofu or vegetable alternative, then enter them in a short receipt list against the ₱300 ceiling.
  3. Wash and cut the vegetables while one person handles rice. Use a clean board for uncooked ingredients and keep bags and gadgets off the shared table.
  4. Start the rice. Sauté the torta vegetables to remove excess moisture, cool briefly so they do not scramble the raw egg on contact, then mix with beaten eggs. Cook several thin tortas rather than one deep cake; check the centre reaches 71°C.
  5. Cook the tofu and tomato side on clean equipment, checking ingredient labels for guests with allergies. Make six equal plate portions rather than allowing the first two guests to take half the food.
  6. Serve promptly, clear the table and calculate actual per-person spend as receipt total divided by six. Any excess should be cooled and refrigerated safely, not left for later on the study table.

Divide the actual bill

A ₱300 bill divided among six diners is ₱50 each. If the basket is ₱330 after buying forgotten oil or fuel, the actual share becomes ₱55 each. Agree how to handle that before cooking. For food variety, include vegetables and a suitable protein along with rice; a count of six eggs alone does not establish six complete meals. Source 1

Project-lunch changes to settle before cooking

  • Only a kettle is available. What to do: Choose a menu that actually suits the safe appliance or buy ready-made food. Reason: Do not recommend cooking eggs in equipment not intended for cooking.
  • Two students do not eat eggs. What to do: Price tofu or a compatible alternative and separate preparation. Reason: Do not call a dish allergy-safe without checking its ingredients.
  • Rice must be bought cooked. What to do: Replace the raw-rice allocation with the real cooked-rice receipt. Reason: The food budget must include purchased preparation.
  • Shopping reaches ₱300 before oil. What to do: Use a supplied pantry item only if it really exists, or revise the cost. Reason: A recipe that ignores small costs will miss its target.
